🐕 The Labrador Personality
They are known as the perfect family dog for a reason. They just love to love and love to be loved.
They are a very intelligent and easy-to-train dog. Their drive for food makes training a breeze, providing you are consistent and display a calm and confident leadership energy.
They love to run, walk, play, sniff, explore and, of course, swim!
The Labrador is the perfect addition to an active family, as daily adventures are a must. A Labrador that does not get their physical and mental enrichment daily can quickly become destructive and, with their hunt and tracking skills, they can get into trouble very quickly.
⚖️Health and Weight
Obesity can place additional strain on their joints and increase the risk of conditions such as arthritis, making maintaining a healthy weight particularly important for this breed.
They are a breed that is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, so any excess weight that they are carrying only makes life harder and more uncomfortable for them. Responsible breeders should undertake appropriate health testing of their breeding dogs when looking to reduce the risk of inherited conditions.
Labradors can also be affected by mast cell tumours, along with a number of other inherited and breed-associated health conditions. This is why health records and appropriate health testing of breeding parents should be explored before choosing a suitable breeder.
Their average life expectancy is around 10 to 14 years, although individual dogs can live longer.
🛁Grooming
This will also help to keep their coat shiny and smelling clean.
They should only be bathed as needed to avoid unnecessarily stripping the natural oils that their skin produces to help protect their skin and coat.
🌎American or English Labrador?
The English line of Labrador is generally a stockier and more solid-looking dog, whilst the American is generally taller and slimmer in their build. These are descriptions of different breeding types rather than separate breeds.
The accepted coat colours of the breed include yellow, black and chocolate. Yellow Labradors can range from very pale cream through to darker shades such as fox red.
There is also an exception in America that allows for ‘silver’ Labradors to be registered. However, this is a touchy subject among the Labrador world.
The Labrador Retriever Club, the American Kennel Club’s parent club for the breed, does not consider silver to be a recognised purebred Labrador colour. The AKC has accepted some silver Labradors for registration, with silver generally considered a shade of chocolate for registration purposes.
here has also been considerable debate about the origins of the silver colour, including the theory that it may have resulted from historical crossbreeding with Weimaraners.
❤️The Labrador Lifestyle
Their ideal home is one that is ready to have another member right in the heart of the family, to sit on the couch with you every night and shower you with kisses when you walk through the door.
To come on every single adventure with you and attempt to steal every meal off your plate if you aren’t looking.
They are the ideal breed for someone who has the time and patience to put into a dog that will give that and even more back every day.
